The portions of Bamidbar and Naso describe how the Jews traveled through the desert for 40 years with the tribes situated around the newly constructed tabernacle. The question is, why was it necessary for them to travel through a desert "no mans land" for such a long time? if they had to wait 40 years before going into Israel as punishment why not make them live in some other inhabited land? Why a desert?
